Sir David Attenborough, noted broadcaster and historian, dropped some revelatory truths about his health struggles. Attenborough is 93-years-old, and enthused it was during a trip to Jura Mountains in Switzerland when things began to seem off: he just couldn’t place the name of a searing yellow plant in front of him. This indeed gave the historian enough reason to worry. Attenborough maintained that he was “coming to terms” with the truth that when finding the right words take longer than usual, one must recognize that not everything is well.
Well, this isn’t the first time Attenborough expressed his concerns over health issues. Back in 2017, when the famous presenter was preparing for “Blue Planet II”, another revelation was dropped. Attenborough claimed to have faced difficulty while writing the script owing to his struggles with “recalling proper names”.
Whether Attenborough is suffering from a case of dementia is yet to be known; the veteran presenter and environmentalist is getting on in years. And, a growing number of individuals of his age experience similar health ailments. Glitches in brain functions are common amongst senior citizens. Memories and names don’t come by as easily as it did, during one’s youth and middle age. While lapses in memory are common, adequate and proactive healthcare can make a huge difference at any age. It all comes down to how well you flex your muscle strength—use it, or lose it. A balanced diet plays a vital role and so does physical exercise.
While dementia is indeed a debilitating health condition, there are various stages to the illness. Getting to the last phase can be reversed with timely intervention and measures. Some of the most prominent symptoms of dementia are major memory loss, difficulty performing familiar everyday tasks with ease, sudden and persistent problems with language, general disorientation to time and place, poor judgment, problems with keeping track of things, abrupt and erratic mood or behavior.
The iconic presenter and environmentalist rose to prominence through his documentaries and iconic voice. His flair for presenting and intensive approach towards raging environmental issues garnered immense acclaim world-over.
