A 17-year-old girl in India’s Tamil Nadu killed herself at her residence, becoming the fourth student to die by suicide in the state over the past two weeks.
The 11th grader, who will not be named, was found dead at her home in the Ayyambatti area near Sivakasi on Tuesday, July 26.
According to local media reports, the teen came home after school and hanged herself to death from the ceiling fan in her bedroom.
The victim’s parents, both daily wage laborers at a firecracker factory, were at work when the teen took the extreme step, reports said.
The girl’s grandmother made the shocking discovery and immediately alerted their neighbors. The police were called and the girl’s body was brought down from the noose.
The teen was pronounced dead at the scene and the body was sent to a medical examiner’s office where an autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death.
The exact circumstances that forced the teen student to take the drastic step remain unclear. It is also not known if a suicide note was recovered from the scene.
However, when the investigators questioned the victim’s parents they claimed the teen killed herself due to unbearable menstrual pain.
“Her parents told us that she suffered severe menstrual pain which may have led her to take the extreme step… But that’s the parents’ version,” Virudhunagar superintendent of police (SP) M Manohar told Hindustan Times.
A case of unnatural death has been registered and a further probe is underway, the officer added.
The alleged suicide comes just a day after another student was found hanging dead at her home in the Cuddalore district on Monday, July 25.
The minor girl reportedly left behind a four-page suicide note, blaming her "inability to fulfill IAS (Indian Administrative Services) aspirations placed on her by her parents", as the reason behind her death.
Another teen student killed herself in the state’s Tiruvallur district on Monday.
.
The victim, a 12th grader of Sacred Heart Girls Higher Secondary School, was found hanging dead from the ceiling fan in her hostel room.
The exact cause of death remains unclear. But, a preliminary investigation indicated that the girl was under pressure due to the monthly tests underway at school.
The specialized CB-CID wing of the state police has begun an investigation into the case.
The CB-CID is also investigating the death of another 12th grader in the Kallakurichi district. The teen girl allegedly killed herself after leaving behind a note accusing her teachers of harassment, police said.
The student, R Srimathi was found dead near her hostel building at Chinna Salem near Kallakurichi on Wednesday, July 13. The teen’s bloodied body lying on the ground next to her hostel building.
Police believe the teen jumped to her death from the 2nd floor of her hostel building. The cause of death as mentioned in the first autopsy was multiple injuries and hemorrhage.
The girl said in the note that her teachers humiliated her for scoring poor grades in several subjects, according to reports.
