Another 12th grader in India’s Tamil Nadu has killed herself, becoming the third student to die by suicide in the state over the past two weeks.
The minor girl, who has not been publicly identified, was found hanging dead at her home in the Cuddalore district on Monday, July 25, reports said.
She reportedly left behind a four-page suicide note, blaming her "inability to fulfill IAS (Indian Administrative Services) aspirations placed on her by her parents", as the reason behind her death, Police Inspector Karthik told NDTV.
Police said the victim’s parents, who are farmers, attempted to complete the girl’s final rites without informing the authorities.
"However, when we learned about the incident, we sent the child's body for post-mortem. A case of suspicious death has been registered," said Sakthi Ganesan, police chief of the Cuddalore district.
The police have currently filed a case of suspicious death and have initiated an investigation.
The alleged suicide comes just a day after another 12th grader was found dead in her hostel room of Sacred Heart Girls Higher Secondary School in the state’s Tiruvallur district.
Police said no suicide note was recovered from the girl’s room. The exact cause of death remains unclear.
The specialized CB-CID wing of the state police has begun an investigation into the case.
The CB-CID is also investigating the death of another 12th grader in the Kallakurichi district. The teen girl allegedly killed herself after leaving behind a note accusing her teachers of harassment, police said.
The student, R Srimathi was found dead near her hostel building at Chinna Salem near Kallakurichi on Wednesday, July 13. The teen’s bloodied body lying on the ground next to her hostel building.
Police believe the teen jumped to her death from the 2nd floor of her hostel building. The cause of death as mentioned in the first autopsy was multiple injuries and hemorrhage.
The girl said in the note that her teachers humiliated her for scoring poor grades in several subjects, reports said.
“The two teachers were brought to the police station for an inquiry. They told us that they just casually asked her to concentrate more and study hard as she was very playful,” Kallakurichi SP S Selvakumar told The Indian Express.
However, the victim’s family claimed foul play, alleging that a wall near the spot where the teen was found dead had the mark of a bloodied palm, reports said.
The school girl’s death sparked massive protests with an angry mob going on a rampage on the school campus, vandalizing classrooms, and setting school buses on fire, seeking justice for the teen. The mob was chanting slogans accusing the school management of pushing the teen to take the extreme step, police said.
Over 100 suspects have been taken into custody for rioting.
On Monday, July 18, the accused chemistry teacher, Haripriya, the mathematics teacher, Kritika, the school principal, and the secretary, were arrested.
