The family of a dead passenger discovered during a routine traffic stop in Georgia are demanding answers after the driver was let go shortly after being pulled over, according to a report.
The vehicle was pulled over on January 29 for speeding and running through a red light, according to WSBTV. Officers then discovered 21-year-old Malachi A. Mitchell's body in the passenger seat while conducting the traffic stop.
It is unclear what condition Mitchell's body was discovered in.
The Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Unit were dispatched to the vehicle while the driver was taken to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office for questioning. He fully cooperated with investigators and was released.
The victim's family, however, believes the driver is responsible for Mitchell's death.
"How do you get to go home?" Mitchell's mother, Kenya, told WSBTV. "And what country do you live in where you can be reckless driving and running through a red light with a dead body and not see one bit of no jail?"
Police are not releasing information about the driver because of threats against his family.
"For the integrity of the investigation and safety of the individuals, we do not intend to release any further information at this time," the sheriff's office said, according to Atlanta News First.
The investigation is ongoing.
