Body cam footage was released Thursday from the fatal police shooting of an Indiana man who had recently been pardoned by President Donald Trump for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot.
Matthew Huttle, 42, was pulled over for speeding on January 26 by a Jasper County sheriff's deputy. "I just want to let you know that I'm a January 6 defendant," Huttle told the deputy, adding, "I can't really afford to get into any trouble right now." Huttle went on to admit he was driving without a license.
When the deputy informed Huttle he was under arrest for a traffic-related felony, Huttle turned from the deputy and ran toward his vehicle. "I can't do it. I can't go to jail for this, sir," Huttle said before entering the vehicle, where he appeared to reach for a weapon and said, "I'm shooting myself" as the deputy repeated "No, no, no!" Believing Huttle was a deadly threat, the Deputy fired multiple shots and Huttle was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to special prosecutor Chris Vawter, a loaded 9mm handgun was found in the vehicle, and dashcam footage confirmed that he raised an object inside the car before the deputy fired. While the blurred footage does not clearly show the final moments, Vawter concluded that the deputy was legally justified in using deadly force, as Huttle posed an imminent risk.
Huttle, who had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for unlawfully entering the Capitol and served six months in prison, was among 1,500 rioters pardoned by Trump the day he entered office. The pardon did not extend to Huttle's other charges, and at the time of the stop, he was classified as a habitual traffic violator, a felony offense.
