Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported the detention of 8,784 undocumented immigrants and the deportation of 5,693 in the first two weeks of President Donald Trump's second term.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released the figure through a 90-second video on its X account which includes details of specific cases and a caption that reads: "In his first two weeks in office, @POTUS Trump delivered on his promise to the American people to begin mass deportations of violent criminals within our borders":

The department used the video to reveal further information about the immigration crackdown. For example, enforcement operations took place in 19 regions including in Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, and New York.

While the administration keeps the issue at the top of its agenda, some analysts have noted that the numbers remain below historical highs. David Bier, Director of Immigration Studies at the Cato Institute, highlighted a discrepancy in enforcement trends on his X account upon the release of the aforementioned video:

"Even as ICE arrests increase, there has been a precipitous decline in ICE removals and returns. The FY 2025 average was 856/day as of November 30. They are reporting 407/day here"

Bier further made his point by providing a side-by-side comparison of immigration numbers from the Biden and Trump administrations:

Detentions have seemingly picked up as a CBS News report detailed that ICE has had to release migrants due to overcrowding:

"On Tuesday morning, space inside ICE detention facilities was at 109% capacity, with the agency holding close to 42,000 migrant detainees, despite having, on paper, a 38,521-bed capacity in its network of for-profit prisons and county jails, according to the internal Department of Homeland Security data"

The administration has begun utilizing detention facilities outside the continental U.S., with reports confirming that flights have transported detainees to an expanded facility at Guantanamo Bay, though these individuals remain in U.S. custody and are not yet counted in removal statistics.

For the Trump administration, deportation figures are a critical metric in achieving its broader immigration agenda, with an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently residing in the U.S.
