Don’t mess with One Direction fans, seriously don’t. Self-proclaimed “Directioners” are on the defense following claims that the boy band’s latest song “Best Song Ever” is a rip-off of the The Who’s “Baba O’Reily.” Unfortunately, though, most pop songs have similar chords and rhythm from which they build their sound, but no use in attempting to explain that to One Direction’s devoted fan base. Instead, “Directioners” took to Twitter to clear the air about the new single, and delivered some serious threats if anyone ever dare mention similarities between the two songs again.
Hell hath no fury, like a Directoner scorned. I know you think I'm joking but sadly I’m being totally serious, their fans went ballistic. "WE DIDN'T BREAK THE VEVO RECORD TO GET THE SONG DELETED. PLUS, WHAT THE F**K IS THE WHO??," tweeted one fan who was devastated following her dedication to One Direction’s cause. Fortunately, The Who’s Pete Townsend reacted to the barrage of threats and chaos by issuing a statement and stating that the band is not suing anymore. Townsend also recognized that the pop music genre possesses a similar sound therefore he viewed One Direction’s use of chords in “Best Song Ever” as a compliment not an intentional rip-off of “Baba O’Riley.”

Townsend stated, "No! I like the single. I like One Direction. The chords I used and the chords they used are the same three chords we've all been using in basic pop music since Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry made it clear that fancy chords don't mean great music – not always. I'm still writing songs that sound like Baba O'Riley – or I'm trying to! It's a part of my life and a part of pop's lineage. One Direction are in my business, with a million fans, and I'm happy to think they may have been influenced a little bit by The Who. I'm just relieved they're all not wearing boiler suits and Doc Martens, or Union Jack jackets. Why would I not be happy about this kind of tribute?"
Fans of One Direction started trending the hashtag, #DontTouchBestSongEver, following reports that the song will be deleted due the seemingly pending lawsuit by The Who. In addition, Click Music furthered “Directioners” anger and fury after reporting that One Direction could be facing legal trouble, "Since Sony decided to recruit some of the most creatively barren songwriters in the industry, we find the 1D team resorting to plagiarism once again as The Who's 'Baba O'Riley' is sterilized and repackaged for fans who probably don't know any better."
The band’s fan who are infamously insanely protective of the five male members rushed to their computer in a campaign to save “Best Song Ever.” It seems that instead of being embarrassed of their unquestioning devotion to One Direction, their irritated fandom embraced their reputation.
And while these two examples were in fact tame compared to most, one fan wrote, "The Who want [best song ever] deleted bc it sound like one of their songs. You can try, you and the rest of your band will die." Sadly, two of the members, Keith Moon and John Entwistle, are already dead. The Who seemed to be a rather allusive band to the army of Directioners, who claimed that One Direction is more famous and well known than the English rock band who have been regarded as the third most important British rock act after The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. This One Direction fan was in such a rage, she was unable to finish a complete thought, however her death threat against the “little known” 70’s rock band was certainly heard, "I SWEAR TO F***ING GOD THE WHO, IF THIS GOES AM HUNT YO ARSE DOWN, ONE DIRECTION ARE MORE KNOWN THAT YOU, SO P*** OFF".
Wow. Like I said DON’T mess with One Direction fans. Check out the two songs below and you decide.
