Earlier this week, the official Android Twitter account announced that Android Lollipop is officially released. The long-awaited Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA (Over-the-Air) update is finally available for most Nexus users, including Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012 & 2013 editions), and Nexus 10. However, when should we expect to see Android 5.0 for GPE (Google Play Edition) devices including Samsung, HTC, Sony, and more?
The new Android 5.0 Lollipop is one of the biggest updates yet and promises to deliver significant changes in design. According to Android, the new Lollipop OS will improve battery life, increase performance, and feature a new appearance that focuses on a crisp layout as well as ease of use. Android 5.0 Lollipop will be rolled out for the majority of recent Android devices over the span of the next couple of months.
Firstly, Samsung has yet to announce when Android 5.0 Lollipop will be available in their line of Galaxy devices. According to Sam Mobile, Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphones with Android Lollipop pre-installed could be released by December 2014. However, given how networks distribute their new phones, the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop-equipped Samsung Galaxy S5 devices likely will not reach customers until January 2015.
As for the latest Galaxy Note 4, the latest Samsung flagship arrived to the market a bit too early to come with Android 5.0. Finally, the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 3 should receive updates in regions worldwide very soon as well. However, Samsung has been mum regarding any specific timeline.
According to HTC, which has been extremely communicative with customers regarding the latest Android OS, the update will be brought to devices as soon as possible. In fact, HTC pledged to deliver Lollipop to HTC users within 90 days after receiving the final Android OS from Google. The updates will begin with the HTC One (M8 and M7).
Alleged reports leaked by LlabTooFeR suggest that the Android 5.0 Lollipop slated to reach most HTC One M7 and M8 devices by February. Next, the HTC Desire Eye, HTC Butterfly 2, and HTC One E8 should have Android 5.0 by March. The HTC One Mini, One Mini 2, One Max, Desire 816 and Butterfly S should begin to receive Android by March through May. We believe Samsung is prepared to deliver OTA updates within a similar timeframe as HTC as well.
Finally, Sony has already announced that it will deliver the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS to the complete line of Xperia Z series devices, which includes the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. However, Sony has yet to announce a specific date the updates will begin.
"We'll start the upgrade at the beginning of 2015 for the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series – continuing thereafter for all remaining devices above," announced Sony.
Stay tuned as we learn more about the upcoming Android 5.0 Lollipop reelase dates in the weeks ahead.
