The latest Android 5.0 Lollipop OS update is now exclsuively available for Nexus devices. However, as we have reported in our Android 5.0 release date for Samsung Galaxy article, the new OS won't be available on non-Nexus phones until 2015. Now, the good people of CyanogenMod have announced that the Android 5.0 timetable is effectively moved forward thanks to the release of the latest CyanogenMod 12 (CM12).
CyanogenMod 12 is the latest iteration of the of the badass free and open source OS that is based on the Android platform. CM12 promises to deliver Android 5.0 Lollipop to the multitude, or more specifically, users of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and S4. Senior XDA developer Shwan5162 shared a special ROM built of AOSP and CM12 in order to bring a mimic of Android 5.0 lollipop that is very close to the Nexus experience. In fact, the XDA developers claim that nearly all Android 5.0 features are functioning in the CM12 for Galaxy S5, with the exception to the upgraded camera and NFC.
As for the Samsung Galaxy S4, XDA developer AntaresOne has shared an unofficial CM12 OS for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 powered Galaxy S4, model number GT-I9505. Unfortunately, the CM12 build is an unofficial version and is not complete. Features including the external SD card, GPS, infrared, NFC, RIL and sound are not working. That said, we early adopters all know the price of using beta software. Without further ado, follow the installation directions below to get the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop-based CyanogenMod 12 for your Samsung Galaxy S5 and S4:
