Prince Charles only mentioned Camilla to his two sons once before Princess Diana passed away. The future king first broached the subject of his then girlfriend in June 1997.

While speaking with Daily Mail, royal expert Penny Junor said that after Prince Charles mentioned Camilla to his sons the first time, they reacted to the news coldly. But between the royal siblings, it was Prince William who took Prince Charles’ news more negatively.

“He had once broached the subject of Camilla with [William and Harry],” Junor said. “It was two months before their mother died, and he was hoping to gradually ease his lover into his life. So, he sat the boys down together and tried to explain the situation, but both of them went very quiet. He sensed William, in particular, didn’t want to know, so Charles didn’t bring up the subject again,” Junor added.

Prince Charles had already been dating Camilla for months before Princess Diana died. In fact, even before the Prince and Princess of Wales divorced, Prince Charles was already having an affair with the Duchess of Cornwall. Prince Charles and Princess Diana simply managed to shield Prince William and Prince Harry from the truth.

Eventually, the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex were left with no other choice but to accept Camilla. After all, Prince Charles made it clear that Camilla was a non-negotiable part of his life.

Throughout the years, Prince William and Prince Harry have also gotten close to their stepmother. And Meghan Markle’s husband recently said that it’s not true that Camilla is a “wicked stepmother.”

In the documentary “Harry: Conversations With The Prince,” Prince Harry also said that the public should feel sorry for Camilla. Following the fallout of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage, Camilla was blamed by the supporters of the Princess of Wales. The Duchess of Cornwall was also blamed for Princess Diana’s death.

“She’s not a wicked stepmother,” Prince Harry said. “Look at the position she’s coming into. Don’t feel sorry for me and William, feel sorry for her. She’s a wonderful woman and she’s made our father very, very happy which is the most important thing. William and I love her to bits,” he added.
