Selena Gomez, recently, admitted falling prey to body-shamers amid her lupus diagnosis. The singer revealed that while getting treatment for the disease, she was forced to deal with people constantly shaming her for her significant weight gain.
On the “Giving Back Generation” podcast, Selena Gomez said the first time she experienced body-shaming was when she was getting treated for lupus. She said she was aware she was gaining weight at the time but she did not expect being attacked by bashers because of it.
“I experienced body-shaming with my weight fluctuation for the first time,” she said. Gomez shared that what made it more difficult for her to deal with bashers was the fact that her health was falling apart at the time.
“I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff,” she said. Unfortunately, she noted that weight gain is something she just could not prevent because of her condition.
According to Gomez, there are several factors that contribute to the fluctuating weight of lupus patients like her. One of those factors is their medication. Gomez revealed that she has one medication that she needs to take for the rest of her life, which hugely affects her weight.
“It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life—it depends on even the month, to be honest,” she said. “So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. In reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends on what’s happening in my life,” she added.
Gomez admitted it was not easy for her dealing with body-shaming and her health struggles at the same time. The singer said reading those online criticisms regarding her weight really messed her up and got to her big time. That, according to her, was one of the reasons she decided to take a social media hiatus.
After going through the ordeal, Gomez has learned to guard her wellbeing online. These days, the singer is more cautious about her approach to social media and makes it a point not to read comments online.
