Today Nintendo announced its' latest hand held gaming device the, Nintendo 2DS. This is the latest version of the popular Nintendo DS and 3DS. The 2DS will be available on October 12 and will be priced at $129.99. The Nintendo 2DS will feature a redesigned structure. Instead of the dual screen clamshell design gamers are used to the 2DS will have a slate-like design. Players will still have two screens for the 2DS but the new device will be reminiscent of the original handheld Gameboy Nintendo first introduced.

The Nintendo 2DS is wide and rectangular shaped. It features controls on the left and right side of the device as well as a slider that will put the system to sleep. The slider replaces the sleep mode that would automatically go into effect when the player closed the clamshell devices like the DS and 3DS. USA Today was given a demo version of the Nintendo 3DS. The demo version included games like "Mario Kart," "Animal Crossing" and Luigi's "Mansion." USA Today describes the system as "feeling lighter and thinner."

Nintendo is stepping up their competitive edge with their tablet like gaming system. Parents looking for a less expensive option for their children might consider getting their little ones a 2DS over an iPad or a Kindle Fire. After all, most kids below a junior high age are just looking for a tablet to play a game on anyway. Nintendo is also lacking behind its gaming console competitors like the Sony PS4 and the X-Box One. Most game makers are creating video games for these two consoles and leaving out Nintendo's Wii U.

Techcrunch.com lists some issues people have raised about the Wii U. These issues could be contributing to why the big gaming companies are not making Wii U games. "Nintendo probably thought that launching the Wii U a year before its competitor was the right move to get a head start. But it is hard to convince existing Wii owners that the Wii U isn't just a tiny upgrade with a tablet-like controller. The name of the console itself doesn't help. It finally is an HD console from Nintendo, but it's hard to communicate about the number of pixels on a screen."

The Nintendo 2DS will be combatable with all 3DS and DS games. The system will also feature same sized dual screens, but the upper will not render 3D graphics. There will be a camera feature in the 2DS system and a memory card to transfer data. Pokémon X and Y will also be released on the same day (October 12) the 2DS system launches.
