Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for the New York Jets, they just did.
Wide receiver Eric Decker has been placed on the season ending Injured Reserve list. Decker suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills, and Jets management was hopeful he would be able to return soon. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Decker will need surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.
Following their loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jets are now 1-4 and have lost three consecutive games. Ryan Fitzpatrick leads the NFL in interceptions, the AFC East is more competitive than the Jets had imagined, and the Jets secondary has been the most disappointing in the league. Considering the Jets don’t realistically have a chance at winning anything this year, it’s a wise move to simply place Decker on IR and open up a roster spot.
Decker entered this season with a lot of promise. He had previously surpassed the 1,000 receiving yard mark in three of the last four seasons, and Decker did have 12 touchdown grabs just last year. With Brandon Marshall by his side, it looked like the Jets were going to make a playoff run this season.
Decker’s three games played this year will be his lowest of his seven year career in the NFL. The Jets could test the free agent market if they want to add another wide receiver, but not many big name wide receivers are available to sign. Decker still has two years remaining on his contract.
Darrelle Revis is listed as “questionable” to play in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals.
