The full extent of the earthquake's impact will likely not be known for days as damages are evaluated. "The death toll and injuries are expected to rise," said the head of the country's military government, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing. Information in the country going through a bloody civil war is severely limited.
The earthquake's epicenter took place near Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city. There was also a 6.4 aftershock. Train tracks have been bent and roads completely destroyed by the episode as well.
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said resources are being mobilized to help Myanmar, one of the poorest of the world.
