A man has been accused of brutally stabbing his wife to death in the presence of his minor children after suspecting her of having an affair in Madh, Malad West, Mumbai, India on Monday, Sept. 12.
The accused, identified as 44-year-old Asif Shaikh, reportedly got into a heated argument with his 38-year-old wife Naseem at their house in Madh, Malad West on Monday afternoon, Sept. 12.
Hours later, at night, Shaikh, in a fit of rage, allegedly attacked Naseem outside their house with a knife in front of their three minor children, a 14-year-old son and two daughters, aged 11 and eight years, before proceeding to flee the scene, Indian Express reported.
Following the incident, the couple’s 14-year-old son called Naseem’s brother Wasim Khan at around 10:15 p.m. and informed him that Shaikh had knifed his mother outside their house. Wasim had reportedly come to the couple's house earlier in the day to pacify them after their fight.
After Wasim rushed to the couple's residence, he found his sister lying unconscious with stab wounds in the stomach and chest by the front door. She was immediately rushed to a government hospital for treatment, but was declared dead upon arrival at the facility.
Following the incident, the local authorities launched an investigation into the killing. The police subsequently tracked down Shaikh and arrested him on Tuesday, Sept. 13, Mid-Day reported.
Sheikh and Naseem reportedly had an arranged marriage 16 years ago. Shaikh, a painter by profession, has reportedly been unemployed for weeks due to the monsoon season. According to Wasim, Shaikh had sold all his wife's jewelry to put food on their family's table. The man allegedly recently began doubting his wife's character and suspected her of infidelity. This led to constant arguments between the couple.
Following the tragic incident, the couple's three children are now in the custody of Wasim and other relatives.
A case had been registered under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the suspect. The accused was recently produced before the court and was remanded to police custody.
