Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón is speaking out after news broke that Netflix removed her from all promotional materials and events for 'Emilia Pérez'. She is the star of the movie that has set a record for Oscar nominations this year, with 13 nods from the Academy, including one for herself.
In a contradictory statement posted on her social media, Gascón reached out to the entertainment press for support, tagging nearly a hundred media outlets across Europe, Latin America, and the United States.
"More than ever today, I want to express my gratitude," wrote Gascón, who is the first woman to be nominated to the Oscars in the Best Actress category. She went on to empathize that she poured her heart and soul into the 'Emilia Pérez family. She also insisted she has been "transparent because I have nothing to hide."
However, last week, she deleted her X (formerly Twitter) account after resurfaced posts showed hateful comments against Muslims, the Black community, and even her co-star Selena Gomez.
"For a long time, I felt lost in my transition, seeking approval in the eyes of others," she added. This raised questions online: Was she implying that those hateful messages were part of her search for approval? Many social media users were surprised that she linked her experience as a trans woman to the controversy.
Gascón concluded her statement with a plea for help. "They want to cancel me," she wrote, without specifying who she was referring to. Was it social media, the press, or even Netflix itself, which has erased her from 'Emilia Pérez''s promotional posters?
The streaming platform has put a significant amount of effort and money into 'Emilia Pérez''s Oscar campaign. After Gascón refused to apologize for her comments on social media and went rogue from the publicity plan, giving another controversial interview to CNN en español during the weekend, Netflix has decided to not even pay for her plane tickets or other travel expenses related to the movie, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
She also asked Hollywood experts and journalists who know her, "How do I move forward?" But within minutes, the comment section on her post was disabled.
Full Statement:
"For years, I gave my heart and soul to the Emilia Pérez family.
As I always do with everything I love and believe in.
Today, more than ever, I want to thank those who have recognized my work, the festivals that have celebrated our film, and every person who has been part of this journey—my team, my castmates, the extraordinary Jacques Audiard, our producers, the incredible crew, the press, and above all, those who have supported and understood my journey.
These past few days have been an emotional rollercoaster.
I have been transparent because I have nothing to hide. For a long time, I felt lost in my transition, seeking approval in the eyes of others.
But today, I finally know who I am.
I only seek the freedom to exist without fear, to create art without barriers, and to move forward with my new life.
They want to cancel me.
I ask Hollywood experts, journalists who know me and have followed my career—how do I move forward?"
A day before she had posted other defiant statement:
I will never apologize because it's a lie, and those of you who know me have judged me without asking me and without giving me a chance to defend myself.
It's clear that the world is getting worse.
What a coincidence that I've spent the last nine months trying to send a message of hope to the world, and just three days ago, suddenly, I've become the worst person in the world.
There are many things I need to improve in this world—how I express myself is one of them—BUT I WILL NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR SOMETHING I AM NOT. NEVER.
