Dominican-American actress Zoe Saldaña has spoken out about the controversy surrounding resurfaced social media publications from her 'Emilia Pérez' co-star Karla Sofía Gascón. The offensive publications targeted Muslims, African Americans, Selena Gomez, the Oscars, and more, sparking backlash in the film industry and among the public.
"I'm still processing everything that has transpired in the last couple of days, and I'm sad," Saldaña said during a Q&A in London, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Saldaña's response
"It makes me really sad because I don't support [it], and I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group," Saldaña stated.
She emphasized that her experience on 'Emilia Pérez' was rooted in inclusivity and collaboration. "I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural and gender equity. And it just saddens me."
Saldaña also underscored the film's significance and its impact on marginalized communities. "It saddens me that we are having to face this setback right now. But I'm happy that you're all here and that you're all still showing up for Emilia because the message that this film has is so powerful and the change that it can bring forward to communities that are marginalized day in and day out is important."
Reaffirming the film's purpose, she added, "And all that I can attest is that all of us that came together to tell this story, we came together for love and for respect and curiosity, and we will continue to spread that message. That's all we can say right now. Thank you."
Gascón's apology
Amid mounting criticism, Gascón issued a public apology, acknowledging that her past publications were insensitive and do not reflect her current values.
"I deeply regret offending anyone with my words. Those comments do not represent the person I am today or the values I uphold. I have changed, learned, and remain committed to the fight for equality and inclusion for all," she stated.
However, the controversy continues to divide social media and the film community. While some believe Gascón deserves a second chance, others argue that her past remarks undermine the inclusive message of 'Emilia Pérez.'
'Emilia Pérez''s historic Oscar nominations
Despite the backlash, 'Emilia Pérez' remains a strong contender this awards season. Directed by Jacques Audiard, the film has secured an impressive 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Gascón.
Gascón's nomination is historic, making her the first trans woman ever recognized in the Best Actress category. The film is also up for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Production Design, solidifying its status as a major Academy Awards contender.
The 2025 Oscars will take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where 'Emilia Pérez' is expected to make history.
