Since the premiere of 'Emilia Pérez' at Cannes and her Oscar nomination for the film, Karla Sofía Gascón's name has gained significant recognition. But who is this actress? And how have her wife and biological daughter been crucial in her journey?
While headlines have recently been filled with the Spanish actress's name, little has been said about her personal life and the key figures behind her success: her wife and daughter.
Although Gascón has been private about her personal life, she has spoken about her family on multiple occasions. She refers to her partner, Marisa Gutiérrez, not just as her great love but also as her source of strength.
A love story
Their love story began when the actress was 19. They met at a bar in Alcobendas, the town where she was born and raised. At the time, Marisa was 18, and their connection was instant.
In an interview for the podcast 'A solas con,' hosted by Vicky Martín Berrocal, the Oscar nominee shared that her romantic journey has not been easy. When she decided to pursue her dreams in the entertainment industry, she moved to Mexico, separating from Marisa.
In Mexico, Gascón built her career in telenovelas and TV series, starring in 'Corazón salvaje,' 'Llena de amor,' 'Una familia con suerte,' 'Como dice el dicho,' and 'El señor de los cielos,' among others. However, success wasn't the only thing she found in Mexico.
The birth of Victoria Gascón
While striving for a career abroad, Gascón faced two life-changing events: the birth of her daughter, Victoria, and a new love.
When Marisa was in the final stage of pregnancy, Gascón was filming a telenovela in Mexico, and the production denied her leave to travel. Defying the restriction, she took a flight to Spain just in time for Victoria's birth.
"I wasn't allowed to be there for my daughter's birth, and I told the production, 'I don't care what you say.' I arrived in Spain on December 17, kissed her belly, and said, 'You can be born now,' and she was born that night," Gascón recalled.
Shortly after Victoria's birth, Gascón had to return to Mexico for work, where she would soon experience another defining moment in her life.
During her time away from Marisa, Gascón began a relationship with a Mexican senator. Their bond became so close that they eventually lived together. However, the actress revealed that her partner deceived her, leading to one of the darkest moments of her life—so much so that she contemplated suicide.
"I was in a relationship in Mexico with a senator, and they tricked me. To sum it up, there was a moment when I wanted the Earth to swallow me up and make me disappear," she shared.
Following this difficult period, Gascón returned to Spain and made the life-changing decision to begin her transition, finally embracing a body that felt right for her.
When she reunited with Marisa to share her decision, it was not an easy conversation. However, she found in her lifelong companion the unconditional support she needed to take that step.
"I should build a monument for her. One day, I will put up a statue or a bust somewhere in recognition of everything she has done for me. For her love, kindness, and the incredible person she has been to me. She has been through it all with me, and in the end, her love has always prevailed," Gascón expressed about her wife.
Marisa has not been the only one by Gascón's side throughout her transition—her daughter, Victoria, now 13, has also been present for it.
In an interview with Infobae, Gascón explained that Victoria was raised free of prejudices and gender impositions.
"Our daughter grew up without the pressure of defining herself as a boy or a girl, but simply as a person... a human being we had to guide toward independence in this world," she said.
Gascón has made it clear that both her personal life and professional success would not be the same without Marisa's unwavering companion, and Victoria, who continues to show her the beauty of motherhood in every stage of life.
