Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny is dominating headlines, and not just because of the release of his album 'DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS.' This time it is because of his appearance as a special guest on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.' Besides performing in the New York subway, he co-hosted the show and had the chance to interview Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of 'Emilia Pérez.'
The lively and entertaining interview touched on the topic of languages—Gascón struggled a bit with English, and Fallon, as Bad Bunny jokingly pointed out, still hasn't mastered Spanish.
A scolding
During the encounter, Gascón began speaking to Bad Bunny in Spanish. Fallon, unable to follow the conversation, admitted he'd need a translator. Gascón jokingly suggested conducting the entire interview in Spanish so Fallon could practice.
Bad Bunny playfully defended—or teased—Fallon, saying, "He's very good with Spanish," prompting laughter from the host, who responded with a comedically out-of-place, "buenas noches."
Spanish dominated the conversation between Bad Bunny and Gascón throughout the interview. However, one moment stood out when Bad Bunny turned serious and humorously scolded Fallon for his poor Spanish skills.
"I've been here like how many times?" Bad Bunny asked. "You've been here six times" Fallon replied. Pretending to be annoyed, Bad Bunny quipped, "And you're still with the same Spanish from the first day," referring to Fallon's lack of improvement in the language.
He then showed off his improving English, saying, "I've been improving my English."
His bilingual abilities saved the interview, especially as Gascón often spoke solely in Spanish, leaving Fallon visibly struggling to keep up.
The exchange sparked reactions on social media, where users brought up the ongoing debate over Selena Gomez's Spanish skills. The backlash from those comments even affected Eugenio Derbez, highlighting the lasting controversy.
This time, criticism was directed at Gascón, with some users questioning the Spanish actress's English proficiency.
Karla Sofía Gascón's Oscar aspirations
Despite mixed opinions about Gascón's character in 'Emilia Pérez,' film critics agree she delivered an exceptional performance. Her work has earned her nominations at major award ceremonies, with several wins already under her belt.
While the Oscars nominations have been delayed until January 23 due to the wildfires in Los Angeles, fans and cinephiles eagerly await to see if Gascón will secure a nomination for one of Hollywood's most prestigious honors.
