Oscar-nominated actress Karla Sofía Gascón is facing intense backlash after old posts from her X account resurfaced online. The posts include xenophobic and racist remarks, as well as comments involving her 'Emilia Pérez' co-star Selena Gomez.
Celebrities like K-pop group BTS are also appearing on the long list of figures criticized by the Spanish actress. But the posts about Gomez stand out as they worked together.
In a 2022 post Gascón quoted a post from Mexican outlet Reforma about the now-iconic photo of Selena and Hailey Bieber taken in October of that year. The outlet reported that the image, captured at the Annual Academy Museum Gala, was proof that there was no rivalry between the two.
Gascón took a stance, making a derogatory remark about Gomez and even insinuating that she had not moved on from her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber.
"She's a rich rat who plays the poor bastard whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife," Gascón wrote.
The photo of Selena and Hailey was widely seen as a symbolic end to years of fan-driven hostility following Hailey's appearance on 'Call Her Daddy' podcast, where she clarified that she had never interfered in Justin's past relationship with the former Disney star.
However, the controversy surrounding Gascón's resurfaced post did not end there.
A user on X pointed out that just months before making the comment, Gascón had shared news about the making of 'Emilia Pérez,' where her name appeared alongside Zoe Saldaña and Gomez as part of the potential cast.
This indicated that Gascón was already aware she might be working with Gomez when she posted the harsh remarks.
The scrutiny of Gascón's social media history began after she made statements accusing the team and close associates of fellow nominee Fernanda Torres of making negative comments about her.
As users dug deeper into her X account, they uncovered a series of offensive posts targeting ethnic groups and public figures, including Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. Just weeks ago, del Toro had publicly defended the film that earned Gascón her Oscar nomination.
Though Gascón has since deactivated her X account, internet users continue to share her past posts as the controversy continues to swirl.
