Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Lernetee McCray was arrested on Sunday following a high-speed chase in Florida. The 31-year-old Jaguar mainstay reportedly tried to flip-off cops who attempted to pull him over for exceeding the speed limit.
According to ESPN, a Fruitland Park patrol officer caught sight of a white Dodge Ram pickup truck rolling at 88mph in a 50mph zone. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop but McCray allegedly flicked the middle finger at the cop and continued to speed off.
While in hot pursuit, the first officer was joined in by a second patrol car as they tried to run down McCray’s truck. The car chase clocked over 100mph with the truck swerving recklessly across three lanes of traffic, forcing police to call off the chase.
Soon after, the Tavares Police notified the Fruitland Park Police Department that the suspect on the loose had come to a stop and appeared to be in an altered mental state. Cops said McCray was behaving erratically and eventually had to be transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
In a police report, McCray did admit he was the driver of the vehicle and responded with, “Oh that was you? My bad.” McCray was questioned at the hospital where he denied having flicked off the officer with his middle finger saying he had only meant to motion the officer to continue following him.
After receiving treatment, McCray was eventually arrested then transported and booked at the Lake County Jail in Tavares, Florida around 8 am on Sunday. He is facing a second-degree felony charge of fleeing/eluding police with disregard of safety to person and property along with a speeding citation. He posted a $5,000 bail and was released at 9:11 am on the same day. McCray is due back in court next month for his arraignment.
McCray has been playing for the Jaguars in the past four seasons as part of its core special team. To date, he has 37 tackles and 2.5 sacks in all of 47 games. In March during the offseason, McCray will become a free agent.
