A 16-year-old pickup driver ran over six cyclists on Saturday, Sept.25, near Waller, Texas.
According to Waller County Sheriff's Office, the group of cyclists was hit as they traveled eastbound on US-290 BUS.
Authorities said the teen driver appeared to have been trying to "roll coal" on a group of eight cyclists training for the Ironman Triathlon.
Cyclist Chase Ferrell said he was pedaling along Old Highway 290 on Saturday morning and was few paces behind the group when the teen driver in a black truck blew thick, black smoke on him.
Shortly after, the teen driver caught up to the remaining cyclists up ahead and attempted to do the same thing.
However, this time, the teen driver accelerated and slammed into six of the eight cyclists, Ferrell and investigators said.
The teen stopped the vehicle, got out, and surveyed the wreckage before Ferrell caught up to the scene.
"Yeah, you did something really freaking stupid," Ferrell recalled telling the teen. "You should go to jail."
"I thought someone was dead. I heard a lot of crunching. I heard brakes. Tires screeching. People screaming," Ferell told reporters from KPRC.
"The reason he couldn’t stop is because he was accelerating to blow more diesel fuel on these cyclists. He ended up hitting 3 people before his brakes even started," he added.
In all, four of the six cyclists who were hit were hospitalized.
Two of the injured cyclist were treated at a hospital in Waller. Another two had to be airlifted to Houston because of the severity of their injuries. One of them was reportedly treated for head trauma.
The other two cyclists were said to have refused medical care at the scene.
According to the sheriff’s deputies, all of the injuries reported were non-life-threatening.
A Gofundme page has been set up to help with the medical expenses of the six cyclists.
Ferrell said the teen's parents showed up at the scene, followed by police.
The teen driver was questioned but ultimately released from the scene without charges.
Waller County authorities have not made any comment about the teen driver or about the consequences he may (or may not) face.
