32-year-old former NFL defensive end, Aldon Smith, was arrested and booked into a Northern California jail Monday on a felony charge of DUI causing injury.
According to TMZ Sports, police documents stated that Smith's bail is set at $50,000. He was involved in a two-car accident at 2:17 p.m. in San Mateo County. Smith was arrested on the scene as one person suffered a minor injury due to the crash. Smith was still in custody Tuesday, and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, according to the media outlet.
Smith has been arrested for multiple DUI arrests in the past. He was also accused of domestic violence-related charges in 2018. In April, Smith was booked on a second-degree battery charge in Louisiana. The alleged battery occurred at a coffee shop in the New Orleans area.
Smith was picked in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Since then, he was considered the superstar defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders. Smith was the seventh overall pick in the draft out of Missouri. He had 42 sacks in his first 43 regular-season games.
However, following his legal troubles and substance abuse issues, Smith was out of the NFL from 2016 to 2019. He was first suspended for one year in 2015, which led to his 49ers dismissal. Then, additional years because of the domestic violence charges.
He missed four seasons before officially returning to the NFL in 2020, starting 16 games for the Dallas Cowboys. According to reports, Smith came out clean in 2020. He was "an overall better person."
Smith then signed with the Seattle Seahawks in the offseason, but he was released before the season began. The free-agent NFL defensive end is a former top-10 pick who showed incredible potential during the span of his whole performance early in his career, but due to issues that came within that course of time, he suffered losses in sports.
Smith's name had not come up during the 2021 season as a potential free-agent acquisition. With the reported recent arrest, the chances of that happening is now unsure.
