It has been officially confirmed by cofounder Ken Levine of Irrational Games that the studio will indeed be closing to pursue a smaller more entrepreneurial endeavor for Take-Two Interactive. In an update on the developers website Levine said, "I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it. I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition."
Gamespot reports that at least 15 staffers will be out of a job, but it is unclear how many people Irrational Games has employed at its headquarters In Massachusetts. However, Irrational Games will offer “financial support” for those employees affected by the change. The website also reports Irrational Games is also willing to help those affected meet with other Take-Two studios to discuss future employment.
Levine’s new and upcoming project will be announced “in time,” he said. Levine has mentioned that the new endeavor will focus on more narrative-driven games. He said the goal is to, "make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable." Whatever form this new project ends up taking, it will be digitally delivered, he added.
Levine mentioned that he is leaving the “BioShock” series behind and handing it over to 2K. No new installments have been revealed beyond “BioShock Infinite” and “BioShock” for the PlayStation Vita. "I'm handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative," Levine said. "If we're lucky, we'll build something half as memorable as BioShock." To see the full message from Ken Levine check out Irrational Games website.
