The highly anticipated Season 4 premiere of “Game of Thrones” is three days away, and fans have never been more excited. But before the premiere of “Two Swords” on HBO, we have some news regarding the second episode that will make you wonder just what Season 4 is all about. Episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose” is rumored to be the chosen episode to showcase the forthcoming wedding between Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell, and now it seems the expectedly over-the-top nuptials are set to be filmed in like anyway we have ever seen on “Game of Thrones.” The series, which is admittedly the crown jewel of HBO, has never been shy about blood, gore, sex, and over the top scenes. The now infamous “Red Wedding” scene in Season 3 was comparable to the shot heard around the world, for after its premiere “Game of Thrones” fans were in shock and awe for weeks. But in recent interviews with “Game of Thrones” show runners it seems they are upping the ante with the “Purple Wedding,” to create an incredibly long and in-depth scene, which reportedly will take up half of the entire episode!
Show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealed to Hitfix, that the grand wedding was an opportunity for an unusually long scene, something “Game of Thrones” hasn’t yet dabbled in. “The long scene you mention struck as a rare opportunity,” the pair admitted when questioned about the one scene that takes up half an episode. “For us it’s fun to see characters who normally occupy separate storylines collide like charged particles in an accelerator. What if Cersei met Brienne? What if Loras bumped into Jaime?" According to HBO, “The Lion and the Rose” has a run time of 52 minutes, meaning that the wedding, more specifically we are assuming, the wedding feast, will compromise nearly 26 minutes of this episode.
In addition to the combining of two of Westeros’ most powerful houses, the Lannisters and the Tyrells, Joffrey’s marriage to Margaery makes her Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, replacing his mother, Cersei Lannister, who currently holds the titled of Queen Regent. The long scene, is a departure from “Game of Thrones” signature filming style, which normally maintains 6 independently developing stories (Kings Landing, Dragonstone, The Wall, Beyond the Wall, Essos, the Kingsroad) at one time.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealed that they are reveling in the rare opportunity to fully delve into one of their multiple interweaving storylines. "But beyond those moments, there's great pleasure in taking a show which normally bounds between locations and slowing it down, lingering on the moment," they added. "When a wedding congregates so many of our characters, we dwell on that congregation at length.” While the Season 4 premiere is set to reacquaint viewers and develop new plot lines, the real action and true scheming characteristic to “Game of Thrones” won’t begin till episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose.” For a full episode preview into what is set to occur during the long wedding scene of Joff and Margaery, read more by clicking here!
