“Game of Thrones” fans have weathered the storm of waiting for Season 4 and with its premiere nearly a week away, its time to discover what is set to happen in the forthcoming season. Following the Season 4 premiere “Two Swords” on April 6th, “Game of Thrones” will continue with episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose” which will most likely feature the highly anticipated marriage between Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell. Following the extravagant wedding ceremony, will be episode 3 “Breaker of Chains,” which runs for 4 minutes longer than it’s predecessor, and finally episode 4 “Oathkeeper” will premiere on April 27th. The fourth episode of the series will most likely connect directly to plot lines developed in the season premiere, mainly due to the parallel nature of the episode titles. While a the validity of a man’s word has been called into question since word of The Red Wedding has spread through all of the Seven Kingdoms, oaths are still an enormous aspect of the political schemes in the perpetual “Game of Thrones” in Westeros. However, episode 4 will not only investigate growing alliances, fans believe the episode title pays homage to a literal “Oathkeeper.”
Following the execution of Ned Stark, the Lannisters came to inherit his sword “Ice,” which was well known throughout Westeros as the ancestral Valyrian steel greatsword of House Stark. The royal executioner and mute, Ser Ilyn Payne was given the sword to use in the beheading of Ned Stark himself on the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor. Tywin Lannister later takes control on the sword has “Ice” re-forged into two longswords, “Widow's Wail,” and the longsword later called “Oathkeeper.” The first sword will be introduced to the fans earlier in Season 4, most likely in episode 2 “The Lion and the Rose,” during the breakfast hosted by Joff and Margaery to prepare for their wedding. Tywin Lannister gifts his grandson and the King of Westeros, “Widow’s Wail” which replaces his current sword “Hearteater.” However, the twin of Joff’s new sword is the more interesting of the pair.
“Oathkeeper” is given to Jamie Lannister by his father, and despite Tywin’s attempt for the gesture to be heartfelt and sincere, Jamie assumes that his power hungry father is mocking his missing sword hand. Deeming “Oathkeeper” useless for himself since becoming a cripple, he gives the sword to Brienne of Tarth, asking her to name it “Oathkeeper” when he charges her with finding the whereabouts of Sansa Stark. Jamie and Brienne’s relationship has grown significantly since their first meeting as captive and guard under the orders of the now deceased Catelyn Stark.
