Andrea Legarreta kisses Fernando Colunga

Mexican artist Andrea Legarreta is making a highly anticipated return to telenovelas after more than two decades away from the small screen. Although she received numerous offers over the years, none matched the appeal — or maybe the paycheck — of playing Fernando Colunga's wife in her latest project.

Legarreta is part of the cast of 'Amanecer,' and, as she said during a visit to the Televisa morning program "Hoy" in Mexico, she's leaving her comfort zone and flexing her acting muscles again.

"I'm still interested in other things. You're going to see me doing something I've never done before," Legarreta said during her appearance on the program that was her home for 16 years and where she was given a grand reception.

Her character's name is Julia, she's a villain, and Legarreta said she loves it. "It's a challenge for me as a woman and as an actress. There are some strong moments..." she affirmed. Some of those moments are intimate scenes with Colunga: "Yes, a kiss, yes," she confirmed. She also explained that "it's a special performance; I'll be in it briefly, but powerfully," she concluded.

'Amanecer' is the most recent version of the iconic telenovela "La Que No Podía Amar," starring Jorge Salinas and Ana Brenda Contreras. The first version of this story made in Mexico was called "Monte Calvario," starring Edith González, Arturo Peniche, and José Alonso. All the different editions have been based on the script written for radio in Cuba by the iconic Delia Fiallo.

The new 'Dawn'

In this case, in addition to Fernando Colunga , Livia Brito and Daniel Elbittar are also involved. The story takes place on a farm, and the elderly protagonist, in this case Colunga, is a complicated man. Producer Juan Osorio, who directed "Amanecer," said that it's "three men in one."
