Tonight, on “American Idol’s” 500th episode, the top 3 –Caleb Johnson, Jena Irene and Alex Preston -- performed for America’s votes one last time before the finale. They showed excerpts of the contestants’ hometown visits. Tonight there were three rounds of competition—Randy’s picks, Judges’ picks and Hometown picks. Caleb had been struggling with throat issues but the show went on and he still performed three songs like a pro.
Caleb Johnson kicked of the first round with Randy’s pick and he sang “Never Tear Us Apart.” He received great feedback from the judges. Up next Randy picked “ “ for Alex Preston. He sang “Pompeii.” He received great feedback from the judges as well. Up next, Randy picked “Titanium” for Jena Irene. She received mixed feedback from the judges. JLo said it was not her best performance.
For the second round, the judges picked “Demons” for Caleb. He received good feedback from the judges, despite the fact that his throat is not 100% tonight. Up next, the judges picked “Stay” for Alex Preston. JLo said it was a beautiful performance and that they even forgot about Rihanna. Keith Urban and Harry loved it. To close out the second round, the judges picked “Heart Attack.” She received good feedback from the judges.
For the final round, the contestants’ hometown picked the songs for them. First up, Asheville, North Carolina picked “Dazed and Confused” for Caleb Johnson. JLo and Keith Urban were on their feet during his whole performance. He said it was insane. JLo said it was a true Idol moment. Harry said he took full advantage of the opportunity. Up next, Vernon, New Hampshire picked “Story of my life “ for Alex Preston. Last but not least, Michigan picked “Creep” for Jena Irene. She received great feedback from the judges.
