With the January transfer period nearing a close, French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain struck a major deal Tuesday, acquiring former Newcastle United and current France national star Yohan Cabaye. The 28-year-old midfielder -- who spent the first seven seasons of his senior career with Ligue 1 squad Lille OSC -- joined boss Alan Pardew and Newcastle in 2011 but now that he is headed to PSG, Cabaye hopes to help his new club claim top prize in the French Ligue 1, with PSG currently holding a three-point lead on AS Monaco. A team that was in desperate need of depth coming down the final stretch of the season, PSG now has a player who can be relied on in all facets of the game.
Reportedly joining his new squad for 23 million euros, Cabaye lands with a Paris Saint-Germain team that watched an earlier bid for the France star get rejected. Upping their buying price enough to entice the Magpies, Cabaye will now have a major opportunity to win a league championship as he leaves the eighth place team in the Barclays Premier League for a table-leading Ligue 1 affiliate with 19 matches remaining on Les Rouge-et-Bleu’s schedule. Excited about adding a strong player to a club that currently includes top scorers in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said that a player like Cabaye will only make his club stronger.
“We chose Cabaye for three reasons,” Al-Khelaifi said. “One, he's a very good player, very promising in our eyes. Two, I've not met him yet, but I've been told he's a really good guy. Three, he's French and it's very important for us to bring French players to PSG, to bring them back to the French league. Everyone has their job to do. There are important players, like the captain, Thiago Silva, and Ibra, who might have a feeling about this or that player. But they are completely in step with what the club is doing from every point of view. Of course, they want the best players in the world to come to Paris. The fans also want that. But Cabaye is a very good player, there is no doubt about that.”
Paris Saint-Germain’s next game comes on Friday, Jan. 31 against Bordeaux with the club resuming its UEFA Champions League slate on Feb. 18 against Bayer Lever.
