A childless couple in India allegedly kidnapped a newborn boy after the woman posing as a healthcare worker took away the child on the pretext of getting him vaccinated.
The shocking abduction happened in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district on Monday, July 5.
"A woman, dressed as a nurse with her face covered with a mask, reached home on Monday afternoon and told the grandfather of the child that she is a healthcare worker and wanted to vaccinate the child. She asked my father to bring the child to her car. When he did, she asked him to bring a few things from inside. As soon as he went inside, the woman fled with the baby in the car," the Times of India quoted the child’s father, Sanjay Sharma, as saying.
The local police began investigating and were able to identify the accused couple after CCTV footage revealed the number plate of the taxi they had hired to kidnap the 45-days-old infant. Subhash Sharma and his wife Priyanka, is the uncle and aunt of the infant boy, Chote Singh, inspector of Anoopshahr police station, told the news outlet.
"We contacted the driver. He shared the number of the person who had booked the car. On placing the phone on surveillance, we caught the couple who admitted that they were the aunt and uncle of the baby," Chote Singh said.
The accused couple has been arrested and the child has been safely handed over to his family.
Several investigation teams were collectively investigating the kidnapping, Santosh Kumar Singh, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Bulandshahr told the news outlet.
"Within 8 hours, a team recovered the child and even arrested those who kidnapped him. Our team used phone and manual surveillance and CCTV camera footage. We have announced an award of Rs 20,000 for the police team for this good work," he said.
The charges imposed on the alleged kidnappers are unclear at the time of this writing. According to the police officials, the suspects are being questioned and an investigation is ongoing.
During the interrogation, the accused woman told the investigators that she could never give birth to a child and the desire to raise a child forced her to kidnap her own nephew.
