A 28-year-old Indian woman hanged herself one day after her wedding anniversary. The woman left behind a suicide note accusing her husband and mother-in-law of harassing her for dowry money.
The unidentified woman was found hanging from the ceiling of her rented accommodation in Namdev Colony, of Ludhiana, Punjab, on Wednesday, Aug.25, police said.
According to the deceased woman’s mother, her daughter and the accused got married around five years ago. The couple has a three-year-old daughter.
The victim's mother alleged the harassment began soon after marriage. She said that her son-in-law is jobless and had been constantly pressurizing her daughter to find money.
The accused had also forced the victim to leave home and stay with her parents, around eight months ago.
Since then the victim had been living with her younger sister, who is a widow, Hindustan Times reported.
"On Tuesday, as it was her fifth wedding anniversary, my daughter called her husband to wish him. But he misbehaved with her. Upset over it, my daughter ended her life by hanging herself from a girder on Wednesday," the victim’s mother said.
"We came to know about the incident when my second daughter returned home and raised the alarm," she added.
Investigating officer, Sub-inspector Baldev Raj said that a case has been registered under sections 304-B (dowry death) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The deceased's husband and mother-in-law have been arrested. A further probe is underway.
In another incident, an Indian police officer was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the death of his wife who killed herself over dowry harassment.
The accused, Adil Hussain, a police constable in the Uttar Pradesh police married Anjum Fatma of Mohalla Darbare Kailsa in 2013.
According to the police, the suspect constantly harassed his wife for dowry money.
On November 20, 2018, Fatma's lifeless body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in their house. Her family accused Hussain of murder. They had alleged that he was at home when Fatma died.
Based on a complaint registered by the victim's father, Hussain and his parents were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The case has since been pending in fast-track court.
During the sentencing, the sessions judge also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 ($680 approx.). The charges on his family were dropped due to a lack of evidence.
