A 27-year-old man hanged himself to death after his long-time girlfriend refused to marry him. The man live-streamed the suicide on social media.
The shocking incident happened on Saturday, August 7, in the Thane district of Maharashtra, India.
According to the police, the deceased, identified as Ankush Pawar, a resident of Kalyan (West) took the extreme step after his girlfriend refused to marry him. The couple had met three years ago and were reportedly in a relationship since then, a police official said.
While live-streaming his final moments on Facebook, the man said he had provided financial support to the woman during their three-year-long relationship.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the couple frequently engaged in heated arguments over several issues. On Thursday, during one such altercation, the woman reportedly told him to "die".
Upset by the woman’s response, Pawar decided to end his life, a police official said, local media reported. The deceased man was working as a ward boy at a local hospital.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and a further probe is underway, police said.
It is unclear if the woman in question was charged with abetment to suicide.
The incident occurred just days after a 19-year-old college student, a resident of Kurla in Mumbai, Maharashtra, hanged himself to death after his alleged girlfriend refused his marriage proposal during a video call.
Police said the boy’s mother got worried after he failed to answer her calls. The mother then called up her neighbors and asked them to check on the boy.
When the neighbors went to the home they found the teen hanging by a leather belt from the ceiling.
The police were alerted and the responding officers pronounced the boy dead at the scene.
According to a preliminary investigation, the teen boy was upset that a girl, from his college, rejected his marriage proposal.
The boy reportedly initiated a video call with the girl and told her that he was going to kill himself because she rejected his proposal, police said.
The police have registered a case and the incident is being investigated as an "accidental death", an investigating officer said.
