A woman was attacked and mutilated by her husband of 12-years. Still recovering from her painful wound, the woman fears for the safety of her daughters. She claims that she became the target of forced female genital mutilation after her husband joined a cult. She was ambushed by the man and other cult members last month leading to her horrific ordeal.
The victim, whose name has not been revealed for her protection, escaped from her village in Kariti Kandara, Kenya with her daughters. Speaking about the events leading to the incident, the woman said that her husband had joined a cult some months ago. Since joining the religious group, the man started holding the belief that he could not live in the same home with uncircumcised women.
He had urged the victim to get the ritualistic circumcision done. He also wanted his daughters to undergo genital mutilation for the sake of his beliefs. The woman refused to give in to her husband’s sudden demand.
On June 9 the unnamed man took the step to forcefully circumcise his wife. The patriarch along with 10 to 30 cult members performed a ritual outside the family’s home. The group performed an animal sacrifice as a part of the ritual, K24TV reported. Around 11:00 p.m. local time, the man knocked on the door of his home urging his wife to let him in.
After the victim opened the door for her husband the rest of the group stormed into the home. They restrained the woman and removed her clothes. Once the woman was naked, the cult members cut her genitals without any anesthetics.
The injured woman somehow managed to escape from her home with her three children. They escaped before the men could mutilate the children.
All Africa reported that the cult, backed by some politicians had suddenly gained power in the region. Taking advantage of their political backing the members of the cult reportedly kept stalking the victim.
The victim claims that she had reported the incident to the Assistant Chief of the area. However, instead of getting help, she was told to return home. The official claimed that the husband had the right to demand the mutilation and the woman should allow it. She has since been rescued by Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege.
While in a safe house, the woman claims that she still fears for the safety of her children. She also stated that she has been left with health issues due to the mutilation.
