Angelina Jolie is currently in talks with Marvel Studios to star in “The Eternals.” The film is one of the new properties being developed by the studio for the Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). If Jolie accepts the offer, “The Eternals” will be the actress’ first venture into the superhero realm.
Marvel Studios is just weeks away from the theatrical release of “Avengers: Endgame,” which will mark the end of Phase 3. Although the film has yet to be released, the next phase of the MCU is already taking shape. After confirming that “Spider-Man: Far From Home” would usher in Phase 4, the studio announced on Wednesday another title that is being developed for the next wave of the MCU.
To be helmed by Chloe Zhao and produced by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, “The Eternals” will be based on the Jack Kirby comics and will span thousands of years in the MCU. Marvel Studios is still keeping a tight lid on the details of the project, but execs confirmed yesterday that they’re keen on tapping Jolie to top bill the project. It remains unknown what character Jolie will play, but the possibility of the Oscar-winning actress jumping aboard Marvel after working with Disney on “Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil” is interesting. News about her possible involvement in the project is also a huge start for the film’s ensemble cast.
In Kirby’s “The Eternals” comics, the story is set millions of years ago, when cosmic beings called the Celestials experimented on humans to generate immensely powered individuals known as the Eternals. The story mostly focused on the battle between the Eternals and the villainous Deviants, as well as the Greek Roman and Norse deities. Marvel Studios has yet to confirm if the upcoming film will remain faithful to its source material.
Meanwhile, Jolie is set to appear in the sequel of “Maleficent,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” which will open in theaters on Oct. 18. The film will mark her first big screen appearance since appearing in the 2015 relationship drama “By The Sea.” Jolie’s star power is expected to generate interest for “The Eternals,” which is one of Marvel Studios’ lesser-known properties.
