Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are bearing the brunt of being stripped off round-the-clock police protection, and have no qualms in admitting the same. Recent reports suggest that the Sussexes have summoned the Santa Barbara Police to their California mansion nine times since they moved in last July. The calls were largely classified as phone requests, alarm activations, and property crimes.
The Sussexes have encountered multiple untoward incidents pertaining to trespassers lurking around in the property. A man named Nickolas Brooks was jailed on the grounds of a misdemeanor, trespassing charge and was later released. Several calls were made to the cops that were listed under property crimes and the like.
The royal couple had addressed the issue— and how tough it has been for the two, owing to the lack of adequate security— on their bombshell CBS interview with Oprah Winfrey. Meghan also mentioned how she wrote to the Royal Family on multiple occasions to not deprive Harry of his personal protection officers as the Duke was reportedly facing death threats. She further ruled that stripping her son from a title was uncalled for, and put him at a high-security risk.
Prince Charles refused to pay for the couple’s security, ever since the UK police protection for the Sussexes was withdrawn after they decided to relieve themselves of royal duties and shifted base to Los Angeles.
“I was born into this position. I inherited the risk. So that was a shock to me,” said Harry, expressing his dismay over being stripped of the facility. He further enthused that the couple was surviving on the inheritance left for him by Princess Diana.
Footing the exorbitant security bills is no easy feat, so much so, Meghan and Harry might still find it a challenge to sustain the expenditure in the long run, despite having clinched million dollar deals with streaming giants like Netflix and Spotify.
The Santa Barbara Police have declined to comment on the issue, as reported by The Telegraph. The couple's shift to California had a lot to do with shielding themselves from ruthless coverage by the British media on their personal lives.
