Kate Middleton and Prince William were recently praised for taking an economy flight to Scotland. The royal couple’s decision to take a budget flight came in the heels of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s criticisms for taking a private jet during their 11-day vacation.
But it has now been revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s budget flight to Scotland was not as eco-friendly as the public thought. Sources said that an empty flight was flown to Norfolk to ensure that the brand Flybe would be shown on the aircraft that the royal couple traveled on. However, it has also been revealed that Prince William and Kate didn’t know about this arrangement.
A spokesperson from the airline denied the allegations, but Daily Mail managed to acquire the flight logs of the company, which revealed that an empty aircraft was indeed flown to Norfolk. The morning flight is usually operated by Flybe’s franchise partner, Eastern Airways, on behalf of Loganzir.
“It’s utterly extraordinary and makes a mockery of their family’s very laudable attempts to travel more economically and in a more environmentally friendly manner,” the source told the publication. “An additional 4.5 tons of carbon emissions were created simply to ensure that an aircraft with Flybe written on the side operated the flight with the Royal party aboard, instead of the usual aircraft which flies the route. It’s obviously not their fault but it is utterly ridiculous,” the spokesperson added.
The spokesperson for Flybe said that they didn’t have any say in the aircraft’s decision to fly to Norfolk without any passengers. The spokesperson suggested that the decision may have come from Eastern Airways.
Eastern Airways said that the questions about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s recent flight from Humberside to Norfolk were irrelevant. The company said that the only thing that mattered was that the passengers had a good time.
“We operate services on the Norwich-Aberdeen route on behalf of Eastern Airways for Flybe — that is with Loganair aircraft and crew — but the deployment of aircraft can and does change to meet airline operational requirements,” a spokesperson for Loganair also said. As of late, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have not commented on the issue.
