Sarah Ferguson once teamed up with Princess Diana in trying to prank Prince Andrew. But the two female royals soon realized that they might have gotten a little too far.

While speaking with Daily Mail, royal expert Sarah Bradford detailed what happened on the Duchess of York’s controversial hen night. She said that Fergie and Princess Diana tricked the police officers into closing the palace gates just as Prince Andrew’s car was approaching.

“They went to Annabel’s nightclub where they narrowly missed Prince Andrew,” Bradford said. “But they then succeeded in tricking the policemen on the gates at Buckingham Palace and they shut the gates in Andrew’s face as his car approached. Fearing an ambush, he screeched into reverse. That’s when Fergie wondered if she’d gone too far,” she added.

Prince Andrew and Sarah tied the knot in 1986, and they were blessed with two children together. But since they’ve only been together for a few months before they tied the knot, the Duke and Duchess of York struggled with their marriage.

Prior to their separation in 1992, Queen Elizabeth II released an official statement asking the public to spare her son, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters any intrusion regarding their private lives. And while the Queen was still trying to prevent the royal couple’s separation from being made public, Sarah found herself involved in a scandal.

While she was still legally married to Prince Andrew, photos of the red-haired royal flirting with financial adviser John Bryan were published in the newspapers. In one of their photos, Bryan seems to be sucking Fergie’s toes.

Years later, Sarah opened up about the controversial snaps during her interview with Piers Morgan. She said that she was shocked when she saw the photos in the newspapers.

“I went through that, and I think it’s an extraordinary tale,” she said. “And it’s one which is, every day I work at. And every day I try and see how and why I did those things,” she added. Four years after Sarah’s scandal, she and Prince Andrew announced their divorce in May 1996.
