When Camilla Parker Bowles and Prince Charles got married in 2005, his official title in the royal family line became the Prince of Wales. But why is his wife being addressed as the Duchess of Cornwall, not the Princess of Wales?

Some people think that since Queen Elizabeth is not close to her daughter-in-law, she does not want her to use the dynastic title granted to the wife of the heir apparent to the British monarch. In fact, the Queen once banned Camilla from entering the Palace after learning about her affair with his son, Prince Charles.

In another instance, Queen Elizabeth reportedly called Camilla “wicked,” and their icy relationship became more apparent. This was one of the surprising big reveals in British journalist Tom Bower’s tell-all book titled “Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion And Defiance Of Prince Charles.”

The monarch told her son that she does not want anything to do with Camilla and called her “that wicked woman.” There are more incidents that showed that the Queen is not so fond of her current daughter-in-law, but this is not the reason why Prince Charle’s wife could not use the Princess of Wales title.

It was said that the Palace prohibited Camilla from using it out of respect to Princess Diana. Although Prince Harry’s mother lost her Her Royal Highness status after she divorced Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth let her keep the Princess of Wales title. However, when she died, the name was made available to whomever Charles will marry.

Still, Camilla did not use the title because it is already very closely related to Charles’ first wife. Other possible reasons why she is not using her official title is because of their widely published extramarital affair, in order not to be associated with Princess Diana, who the people still remember and love.

The public is likely to be outraged if Camilla will be called the Princess of Wales, and they want to avoid this. Queen Elizabeth surely does not want to anger the public, so it’s better to just leave the title to Princes William’s mother even if she’s no longer around.
