Not every mother has a problem-free relationship with their daughters-in-law. This explains why for royal family fans, one thing they’ve been wondering about is whether Queen Elizabeth II has a good relationship with Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex.
When it comes to Her Majesty’s relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, describing it as complicated would still be putting it mildly. The public first came to know of Camilla when news broke out that Prince Charles’ cheated on Princess Diana with her.
In fact, the public hated her back then as she was seen as the third party who stole Prince Charles from Diana. But it’s not just the public or Diana’s fans who had a negative opinion of her back then as even some royals disliked her for bringing negative publicity to the family — the Queen included.
In fact, there were unconfirmed reports saying that Her Majesty even referred to the Duchess of Cornwall as a “wicked woman” after having a few martinis. She was also reportedly banned from Buckingham Palace, but it seems that the two royals already kissed and made up these days.
Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II’s other daughter-in-law, Sophie, did not join the royal family under controversial circumstances. The Countess of Wessex married Prince Edward, Her Majesty’s youngest child, in 1999. And the royal couple has two children at the moment, 15-year-old Lady Louise Windsor and her 11-year-old younger brother, James, Viscount Severn.
Reports say that the Queen views Sophie as one of the most reliable members of the family. In fact, she is said to be closer to Her Majesty compared to Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.
“She is trusted and relied on by the Queen in a way I couldn't say applied to the Duchess of Cambridge or the Duchess of Cornwall,” a royal aid claimed. “She is like another daughter to Her Majesty, they are that close.”
The Queen reportedly had a hand in making sure Prince Edward and Sophie become a couple. In a rare show of support, Her Majesty arranged so Sophie can have her own pass and enter Buckingham Palace whenever she wants to. She was even allowed to stay overnight in the royal apartments near Prince Edward’s suite of rooms.
