A protective mother elephant trampled and killed a crocodile that posed a threat to her young calf.
The "shocking" encounter was witnessed and filmed during a safari in Zambia. The video shot by Hans Henrik Haahr has now gone viral on social media
"Crocodiles are opportunistic hunters and have been known to prey on baby elephants. This mother elephant was not taking any chances and was not happy with the crocodile being so close to her young calf –to protect her calf, she removed the threat of the crocodile entirely," the video is captioned.
At the beginning of the video, the mother elephant can be seen using its trunk and head to push the predator reptile.
The mother soon gets aggressive as she tramples the croc under her weight.
Since the mother elephant didn't have tusks, she can be seen using her mouth for most of the attack.
The mammal can also be seen wrapping her trunk around the reptile's tail and tossing it around while trampling it.
The territorial and protective act resulted in the crocodile's death.
Hans said that he had almost no words to describe the encounter, just that it was "shocking!"
The video has gone viral on social media and has garnered more than 4 lakh views.
Netizens shared their thoughts on the clip in the comments section.
One user said, "It's amazing how the elephant kept its tail up throughout the incident."
Another wrote, "Croc: I'll crush you with my jaw and teeth. Eleph: Really? Let's see. I'll crush you with my weight. I'm the heavyweight champion here."
A third user commented, "Mama was very, very angry! Never mess with a mom who protects her family! AND no animal can beat an African Elephant alone."
Yet another added, "Elephant: 'I had told u not to come near my little one... It's time I knock some sense into you.'"
"Elephant was paid by the Gazelles! Awesome video," another user wrote.
"As herbivores, elephants may not have much of an instinct to kill other species. But this elephant sure seems to understand what 'make dead' means," another comment read.
