An unemployed man and his family including a year-old infant were found dead at their home in the Indian city of Pune, Sunday, May 9.
According to police, the man, identified as Hanumant Shinde, murdered his wife and infant son before killing himself.
The 39-year-old had been unemployed for a while and was reportedly facing a strong financial crisis.
Police officials said the man strangled his wife, 28-year-old Pradnya Shinde, and then slit the throat of their infant son, Shivtej Shinde, before hanging himself.
"The man was unemployed and due to financial constraints strangled his wife and slit their child’s throat before hanging himself in the bedroom," read a statement from officials of Loni Kalbhor police station.
The deceased man’s father, Daryappa Shinde, however, believes that his son and family were murdered. He has filed a case under Sections 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code at the Loni Kalbhor police station.
As of now, the investigating officers have found no evidence suggesting foul play. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further details were revealed at this time.
In a similar incident, a priest attempted to kill himself after giving poison-laced water to his son and daughter saying it will protect them from Covid-19. The incident happened May 2, in the city of Rajkot in Gujarat, India.
The 45-year-old priest had also saved some of the poisonous drink for his wife, but then later drank it himself as she was busy in the kitchen. All three were rushed to a nearby hospital after the children complained of having breathing difficulty.
According to the police, the man was battling depression after being reportedly cheated by two persons to whom he sold his house. Police found a suicide note written by the man where he blames two persons for sparing him no other option other than death.
"There is no work due to Covid-19 situation. I don’t even have Rs 5000 at present and there are installments of car and home loans to be paid," the man's suicide note read.
The accused men, however, claimed they had paid the full amount to a lawyer to broker the deal.
The victims were reported to be in critical condition.
