A three-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 19-year-old neighbor who took the child to an isolated room on the pretext of playing with the child.
The heart-wrenching incident happened on Oct.23 in Ludhiana, an industrial city in the north Indian state of Punjab.
Based on a complaint filed by the child’s mother, the accused teen, identified as Karan, a daily wage laborer was arrested on Tuesday, Oct.26, the police said.
According to the investigators, the child’s parents, both factory workers were at their place of work when the alleged incident occurred.
The victim and her 6-year-old brother were home alone when the alleged pedophile came to their home and took away the girl.
Her parents returned home from work to find the girl crying. They also noticed bloodstains on her clothes, the Hindustan Times reported.
When they asked her what had happened, she reportedly told that Karan had touched her. The child, however, failed to give any more details of the alleged abuse, police said.
The boy told his mother that Karan had come to their home earlier in the day. He said Karan took his sister to an isolated room in the laborer’s quarters, saying that he wanted to play with her, but when she returned she was crying.
The police received a complaint on Tuesday and shortly after the suspect was arrested, Division Number 6 station house officer, Inspector Amandeep Singh Brar said.
However, the charges imposed on him are unclear at this time. A further probe is underway.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 4-year-old girl who was playing outside her home in the Indian city of Hyderabad was allegedly raped by her neighbor who called the child to his home under the pretext of giving her a toy.
The incident took place on Oct. 15, but it came to light only on Oct. 21, when the child’s parents approached the police to file a complaint against the accused neighbor.
“The offense took place at the residence of the accused. When the girl raised an alarm, the accused let go of the girl. After the offense, the girl’s family went to their native place and there they came to know about the incident. On Thursday after returning to the city, they lodged a complainant,” the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Rajendranagar division) B Gangadhar said.
Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 376 (rape) of IPC and began investigating.
The child was sent for a medical examination and the unnamed suspect was picked up for questioning. It is unclear whether the suspect has confessed to the crime.
The investigation continues as the officers were awaiting the victim’s test results, police said.
