Eugenio Derbez is making a name for himself in Hollywood, but did you know he had a famous mother? His mom was Silvia Derbez, a legendary actress that participated in many telenovelas. Ms. Derbez was a pioneer in the format as she was the lead in the very first telenovela made in Mexico called "Senda Prohibida." In this soap, Derbez played an ambitious young woman that seduces a married man. That plot seems way more risqué than anything on Telemundo and Univision right now. To think that was televised in 1958 is shocking. Silvia went on to star in many hit novelas like "Elisa," "María Isabel" (1966), "Cruz De Amor," "El Amor Tiene Cara De Mujer," "Ana Del Aire," "Mamá Campanita," "Simplemente María," "Lazos De Amor," "La Usurpadora" and "Infierno En El Paraíso."
Silvia Derbez last telenovela was "La Intrusa" in 2001. She had to shortly abandon the production as her pulmonary cancer spread. Derbez died in April 2002. As a trailblazer in telenovelas, her name is iconic. Her career spanned decades and was wildly recognized for her incredible work. Silvia Derbez is a legend and that is why producer Juan Osorio is commemorating her with a special honor. Silvia will be part of his new production "Sueño De Amor" that stars Betty Monroe. Right from the beginning, Osorio mentioned that he wanted this melodrama to be in homage to the late actress. "I asked Eugenio Derbez for permission and he authorized that Silvia be part of this project and her image will be in great part of the story," Juan Osorio said.
How will Silvia Derbez be utilized in the "Sueño De Amor" plot you may ask? "When Esperanza (Monroe) says, 'mother, I miss and love you so much,' I will be bringing her back to the telenovela world," Osorio revealed. "I worked a lot with her, she was a great person, nice and hard working. She is the queen of tears, she concentrated and had an impressive way of managing the melodrama, but in real life she was very funny, a woman full of virtues that I had the privilege of sharing with." We can't wait to watch this scene that will feature Silvia Derbez. "Sueño De Amor" airs Monday through Friday at 8pm ET/PT on Univision.
