Six people, including two women, have been arrested after the horrifying video of a young girl being viciously raped and tortured went viral online.
The incident reportedly took place in Bengaluru, a southern state in India, almost six days ago. Cases of rape and assault have reportedly been registered against six suspects at the Ramamurthy Nagar Police, said Bangalore authorities.
A gut-wrenching video of the attack, which has been widely circulated on social media, showed the 22-year-old woman being brutally tortured by four men and women. The group reportedly went on to brutally insert a bottle into the victim’s private parts and allegedly gang-raped after, reported NDTV.
On Thursday, the Assam Police had offered a reward for anyone who was able to provide information regarding the culprits seen in the widely circulated video. This led many to believe that the victim in footage was the Nagaland woman who committed suicide in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, on Sunday, May 23, after being subjected to abuse.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, IPS officer Robin Hibu, Meghalaya MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh, and Assam Police posted on social media Thursday to clarify that the viral sexual assault video was not in any way related to the Jodhpur suicide case, EastMojo reported.
Bangalore police, with the help of Dhaka police, have identified that the victims and accused are Bangladeshi citizens. Based on a tip-off they received, the Bangalore police arrested four of the accused from their home in Avalahalli. The accused were identified as Mohammad Baba Sheikh, Riday Babo, Sagar, Akheel. The identity of the women has been withheld by the police, The New Indian Express reported.
A senior police officer reportedly revealed that the accused were running a prostitution racket and the victim had eloped with their money. This led to them tracking her down and when she refused to return the money, they resorted to assaulting her.
Deputy Commissioner of Police from Tejgaon, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Md. Sahidullah revealed that the victim has been identified as a resident of the Mogbazar area in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Reportedly, the girl was getting ready to travel to Saudi Arabia and was securing her travel documents for the past few months when she went missing three months ago.
One of the accused has reportedly been identified as 26-year-old Rifatul Islam Hridoy, a resident of Mogbazar. He is a popular TikTok star in his neighborhood and is popularly known amongst his friends as "TikTok Hridoy Babu."
