Selena Gomez and The Weeknd’s second break-up anniversary is nearing, so how about a retrospective? Back then, everyone had high hopes because their romance was expected to be their ticket to getting over their respective exes, but life had other plans.

News of an emerging relationship between the two musicians first swirled in January 2017, when they were snapped making out at a dinner two months after The Weeknd broke up with model ex Bella Hadid. What followed was a series of Instagram posts and stories that chronicled their trips together.

Naturally, Hadid unfollowed Gomez, while the new couple also unfollowed her back. The Weeknd then got busy with his world tour, so the lovestruck Gomez joined him on stops in Italy, Switzerland and Brazil, among others.

The two finally made their relationship IG official after the R&B superstar posted a video of them together at a vacation in Toronto, while the former Disney star uploaded a couple selfie during Coachella 2017. They took it to the next level (of publicity) when they attended the Met Gala together while Hadid’s mom, Yolanda, and brother, Anwar, were standing right behind them.

“It’s really hard when I would want to spend so much time hiding things,” Gomez explained for their decision to go public. “It’s too much pressure, and I think everyone gets over anything eventually,” she continued.

The two made more publicized memories together. The Weeknd flew from Paris to LA for Gomez’s 25th birthday. They spent a day at Disneyland and walked the red carpet at the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS party before smooching.

It all went south when Gomez’s ex Justin Bieber started to reconnect with her after she had a kidney transplant. The two were seen having breakfast together, going to church and spending a whole day at each other’s places.

Despite The Weeknd’s insistence that he was fine with the two hanging out, he slowly unfollowed people close to Gomez — until People broke the sad news on Oct. 30, 2017. “It’s been hard for them to come to the realization that this is the direction things were heading, but it’s been hard for months,” a source dished.
