A man spent three harrowing days trapped at the bottom of a 12-meter-deep abandoned well in a remote forest in Thailand, as his cries for help were mistaken by locals for ghostly wails.
Villagers reported eerie nighttime noises to authorities on Nov. 24 but refrained from investigating, fearing supernatural forces, Malay Mail reported.
Liu Chuanyi, 22, said he conserved his strength by shouting for help only once every hour. On Sunday evening, a patrol unit passing through the area heard his cries. When they called out, Liu responded, prompting a search and rescue operation by the Mae Sot Pitakkarn Foundation.
Rescuers located Liu at the bottom of the dry well and pulled him to safety after a 30-minute effort. He was found in a weakened state, suffering from a fractured left wrist, a concussion and multiple bruises. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities believe Liu accidentally fell into the well while lost in the forest. Immigration officials are now investigating why he was near the Thai-Myanmar border.
The well is set to be sealed to prevent future accidents.
