Robert Pattinson admitted that at one point, he cannot help it but Google himself, which was embarrassing when he got caught. On his defense, it was not because he was so vain at the time and wanted to know how he is being portrayed online.
According to the “Twilight” actor, back in May, he became obsessive with checking his phone while on a flight from Los Angeles to the South of France. He wanted to know what is being written about him at the time, but it was not because he was finding some pleasure from doing so.
Instead, while heading to the Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of his then highly-awaited movie, “The Lighthouse,” he heard from someone that he was going to be cast as the next Batman. At the time, he was going to start shooting for the movie, “Tenet.”
Pattinson was not happy with the said “rumor” at the time because he felt that if people would not stop spreading it and talking about, he would really lose a chance to play the iconic role. He had not even auditioned at the time the said leak took place and the rest of his team knew the gravity of the situation.
“When that thing leaked, I was f—ing furious,” Pattinson recalled to Variety. “Everyone was so upset. Everyone was panicking from my team. I sort of thought that had blown up the whole thing.” Hence, all the Googling he was tempted to do, just to confirm that he has not been officially removed as a possibility for the said highly-coveted role.
If Googling himself was embarrassing enough for him, he also shared that he was further humiliated to find out that he was sitting next to Christopher McQuarrie the whole time. “I’d never met him before,” Pattinson explained. “Oh, God! He’d seen me Googling myself for the past hour!” Pattinson recalled thinking.
He promptly explained to the director of the latest “Mission: Impossible” movies what he was doing and fortunately for him, the director said that he would probably do the same if he was in Pattinson’s shoes.
The role proved fated to be his though. The rumors were premature given he did not even audition, but they did not even do anything to Pattinson’s chances of playing Batman.
A petition emerged to have him replaced though through Change.org. Some fans did not like him to play Batman and they were aggressive In their efforts for him to be gone. Pattinson said he was not bothered. If anything, he shared that being the underdog is fun.
“To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting,” he said. And he’s not deterred by the doubters: “It’s much more fun when you’re an underdog. There’s no expectation of you.”
