A Spanish judge suspended charges against Princess Cristina on Tuesday, arguing that there was not sufficient evidence that she had been an accomplice in an embezzlement case involving her husband that made news last year.

The second daughter of King Juan Carlos was charged last month with allegations of corruption, the first time a royal family member has been subject of criminal proceedings.

The High Court of Mallorca overturned the early judgement of Judge José Castro. The charges could be reinstated if further evidence is unearthed.

Castro stated that there was evidence that the princess had helped her husband, handball Olympic player turned businessman Iñaki Urdangarín. He has been charged with fraud, tax evasion, falsifying documents and embezzlement of 6 million euros (approximately $8 million) in public funds.

The case has deepened the public discontent in Spain with the monarchy and other powerful figures while many Spaniards struggle with a long-running recession.
