“Pretty Little Liars” 100th episode welcomed the return of “A” and in a pretty explosive way. In the final minutes of “Miss Me x 100” the Liars not only discovered the identity of the body in Alison’s grave, but also witnessed a huge detonation that still has an unknown death toll. “A” made his/her presence known by blowing up the home of Toby and Jenna’s house, who despite being step-sibling normally find themselves on the opposite end of the “A” spectrum, which makes the choice of home even more curious. Following the initial shock of a Rosewood tragedy, many PLL fans were left with one burning question, why Toby and Jenna’s house?
Our first piece of evidence in discovering the motive behind the fire is a clip of Caleb in the promo video for episode 6, “Run, Ali, Run.” Caleb turns to Hanna as they are watching Toby’s house burn, and states the obvious “A” doesn't shoot and miss,” and while we appreciate his honesty, on “Pretty Little Liars” the truth is scary. So keeping Caleb’s comments in mind, “A” choose Toby and Jenna’s house for a reason and we have 5 possible theories as to why!
Our first theory as to why “A” blew up Jenna and Toby’s house was because Toby is the next “A” target. Before his departure to London, Toby was knee deep in “A” drama, even finding himself as a part of the “A” team in a desperate search for clues about his mother’s mysterious death at Radley. “A” could have chosen to blow up Toby’s house in a sort of retaliation for Toby’s now obvious double cross of “A.” In addition the explosion scares the Liars, especially Spencer, who is one of his or her favorite victims. Going off the Spencer and Toby connection, the pair finally seems to be back on track so it would be within “A’s nature to attempt to derail their sound relationship. Additionally, related or unrelated to this particular explosion, whatever the “A” mystery is the Hastings family is definitely in the middle of the secret, meaning that “A” could have been targeting Spencer through Toby.
We also must consider the other member of the household—Jenna. It is totally possible that Jenna was the intended target of the “A” attack, we know Jenna was involved with Shana, who was the last confirmed “A,” so it’s possible that new “A” is trying to trim the fat. This wouldn’t be the first time Jenna was attacked, remember when “A” hit her over the head at Emily’s surprise birthday party and she almost drowned. Yeah, safe to say Jenna could have been the one meant to receive “A’s” fireworks.
But considering Jenna’s ability to be both innocent and evil at the same time, she could have also been involved in the explosion for the sole purpose of taking some of the heat off herself. Jenna was most “PLL” fans first “A” suspect, so isn’t it possible that she along with some members of the “A” blew up the house to make her look like the victim. One thing’s for sure, the Liars have a tendency to bring anyone into the fold, Mona, even after she tried to kill them, Ezra, Lucas, Shana, Paige and most recently Sydney.
Our last theory and possibly the most interesting one, is the idea that “A” was destroying evidence by destroying Toby’s home. One of the still unresolved major mysteries on “Pretty Little Liars” is the connection of Toby’s mother’s death at Radley and of course the still unknown “blonder girl” Dr. Palmer warned both Toby and Spencer about. So maybe there was evidence in Toby’s house, which would lend him some clues on the matter. Fans discovered that the girl in Ali’s grave, Bethany Young, was a patient at Radley, as was Toby’s mom, and with the continued significance of Radley growing and Toby’s mother’s death continuing to remain a mystery fans are growing ever more convinced that her fate is one of the keys to the uber “A” mystery of “Pretty Little Liars.” Maybe “A” realized that Toby was close to discovering some evidence now that he was back in Rosewood and uniting with the Liars again.
