The Only Time Prince William Seriously Broke Kate Middleton's Heart

The only time Prince William seriously broke Kate Middleton’s heart happened in 2007, and it almost led to the couple parting ways for good. Luckily, Prince William took the initiative to make up with Kate before it was too late.

Although the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge seem to be the perfect picture of love today, something happened before they got wed that almost made their union impossible. Just like any normal couple, Prince William and Kate also had their own share of ups and downs throughout the years they dated. One of the downs they had to face, however, left Kate seriously heartbroken that she decided to call it quits with the Prince.

Prince William and Kate started to date when they were in college. For the many years that they had been together before their marriage, Prince William had been able to build a close relationship with Kate’s family, attending family affairs and joining their family vacations.

On New Year’s Eve of 2007, Prince William was supposed to spend the holiday with Kate’s family. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. Since royals are bound by strict Christmas traditions, Prince William was not allowed to leave his family in Sandringham, Queen Elizabeth’s royal estate in Norfolk. The fact that he accepted Kate’s invitation to welcome the New Year with her family and he pulled out at the last minute wound Kate up.

Prince William’s decision to cancel when he had told Kate all was well in the world reportedly left Kate in tears. For Kate, the distance between them at that time was too difficult to bear. From a difficult Christmas season, they almost did not get to spend quality time together in the months that followed, and the road became rocky for the couple. This ultimately prompted Kate to break up with Prince William in April 2007.

Fortunately, the split was only temporary. Two months after they broke up, they decided to give each other another shot at love. In June of that year, Prince William and Kate reunited. Later that year, Prince William proposed to the love of his life, and the rest is history.
